Location
This is a photo of Kingwood Flats shot from John Street in Brighton UK. On the right of the frame can be seen the roof and spire of St Peter's Church and the City College building.Time
This was shot around 2pm on an overcast day in February 2014.Lighting
The cloudy sky makes for flat diffuse illumination. Decidedly undramatic but giving the image a somewhat bleak mood.Equipment
My battered old Nikon D40 with the 18-55mm kit lens, hand held as usual.Inspiration
The rigid repetition of the windows and balconies with their subtle differences that hint at the lives of the individuals who dwell within.Editing
Shot in RAW format and made monochrome with adjustments to the highlights and shadow. Contrast and clarity boosted with some burning in of the sky and dodging of other areas and a little vignetting to draw in the outer edges of the frame. A little adjustment applied to the alignment of the frame to straiten up the shot, a pitfall of not using a tripod. In my camera bag
Just my Nikon D40 with the 18-55 & 55-200mm stock lenses it came with and an SB-400 flash.Feedback
The geometric structure of the image is what made me choose it over the others I shot at the same location. I concentrated mainly on the way the building divides up the frame and is a counter point to the view across the rooftops to the building in the background.
