Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was shot from Muley Point in Utah. That is Monument Valley in the distance being hit by lightning. The Goose Necks of the San Juan River appear in the darkened canyon below.

Time

This was taken as the sun was setting to the right of the frame.

Lighting

I was set-up with my tripod and gear but as the wind from this fast moving storm moved in I had to take my Canon 20D off the tripod to prevent it from being blown away. I ended-up sitting on the ground and hand holding the camera.

Equipment

Canon 20D Canon 24-105 mm L series lens B&W circular polarizer

Inspiration

I was there hoping for some nice sunset shots. The storm just happened and ultimately I needed to run for cover as the sky opened up and the rain fell in torrents. I had to abandon the idea of camping there and drove down the Mokey Dugway and drove into the town of Mexican Hat and found a cheap motel for the night.

Editing

Levels adjustments were one in PhotoShop and I used Topaz Detail to give the photo some "pop".

In my camera bag

Now I have a Cann 5D MKII and a Canon 7D, and a Canon 20D. I have a Canon 24-105, Canon 70-200 f/2,8, Canon 16-35 mm f/2.8, Schneider 4x6 glass filters and a Lee filter holder, Tiffen adjustable ND filter, Giotto tripod, Canon shutter release.

Feedback

When the skies darken like this you need to open up to a wide f/stop to allow as much light as possible and also give you a faster shutter speed. Try shooting in multi-shot bursts hoping to catch the lightning bolts.
