Location
This photo was taken at a popular West Coast Beach in Auckland New Zealand called Piha. Known for its surf on this particular evening the tide was out at sunset so I thought I would take a walk along the beach and take a few snaps. Ended up running a bit late and got there just after sunset.Time
The drive to the beach is about 25 mins from my place. I wanted to take an evening walk out there but thought I may have left a bit late to catch the sunset. By the time I made it there the sun dipped below the horizon. I ran out to the beach to get as many snaps as I could before darkness hit. Managed to get a few snaps away while the lighting was dramatic.Lighting
I exposed for the sky which was looking pretty dramatic. This ended up making a great silhouette of the coastline in the background and the father and son who happened to be walking past enjoying the views.Equipment
I got into photography using mirrorless cameras. This particular shot was taken with a Sony A7 with the 35mm F2.8 Zeiss lens mounted to a tripod.Inspiration
I love the raw feel of the West Coast beaches in Auckland. To be honest being there and hearing and feeling the sea breeze along with the crash of the surf takes me to a different place mentally. When I'm feeling down after a tough day at the office there is no better place to go.Editing
Yes, using Adobe Lightroom I increased vibrancy and saturation to really bring out the colours. There was also slight push of the shadows as well to really enhance the silhouette effect. In my camera bag
As I shoot Sony mirrorless I have a couple of the FE primes handy. The 35mm 2.8 and 55mm 1.8 Sony Zeiss lenses make for good walking around lenses and are always ready to go. My favourite lenses.Feedback
I'd say a bit of planning helps. If I had planned the day a bit better I may have been able to get a few more shots that evening by getting to the location a bit earlier. Still managed a few away on this occasion but it might not have ended up that way on a different day. Also being a place I've been to a few times I knew what the light would be like. It pays to get to know your surroundings if you can. Helps you gauge the lighting and potentially what it does to the area around you.
