Behind The Lens

Location

I took this shot in my bedroom. I had received a new tripod for a present and setup my fav camera at the time (Sony NEX-7) on it. Thought I'd take snap of my camera and tripod to show the person who gave me the gift. This was one of the shots that ended up resulting.

Time

This shot was taken at late one night. I'm an insomniac.

Lighting

I had a 40x40 softbox handy which I setup to camera right. Thought it would give it the real product photography look.

Equipment

I took this shot of my Sony NEX-7 with my older Sony NEX-3 ( l love mirrorless cameras). I used a 50mm F 1.8 lens. My NEX-7 was mounted onto an Induro Tripod and lighting was supplied by a 40x40 softbox.

Inspiration

I'd seen a lot of product photography on sites like Ebay and TradeMe in New Zealand where Iive. Thought it would interesting to try and take an everyday object and make a great shot out of it. My intention was to showcase the tripod but the shot of the mounted camera ended being the real keeper.

Editing

I used the Nik Software (Silver Efex pro) to create this B&W image.

In my camera bag

As mentioned I'm a fan of mirrorless cameras as I started photography with a Sony NEX-3. I moved up to the Sony NEX-7 and now I shoot with a full frame Sony A7.

Feedback

I got this shot by experimenting with lighting. Don't be scared to try a few things out. By spending some time playing around with lighting I managed to get a pretty cool shot. Some things work better than others. Invest the time and see what works you.
