Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken outside of Stanley, ID. The mountains in the background are the Sawtooth Mountains.

Time

I took this photo early in the morning, around 7 a.m. I arrived there before sunrise and waited for the perfect shot.

Lighting

It was a clear beautiful day, all natural lighting.

Equipment

I took this with my old camera, my Canon 50D, and it was on a tripod. I honestly cannot remember the lens I used (I know, that's awful!) I had rented a couple of lenses to take with me on this trip. I had my ISO set at 100, my Aperture was 7.1, and my exposure was 1/125.

Inspiration

The scenery was beautiful, I took a hike the day before and found a Ranger Station. I asked for a map, and when looking at the map, this area was marked for great photography shots. I have always wanted to photography the reflections of mountains, and I was beyond excited. A group of us went, and while my friends set up to go fishing I hiked around the lake until I found the perfect spot.

Editing

I did very light editing in Adobe Lightroom. I enhanced the blue in the sky, and lightened the shadows on some of the mountains.

In my camera bag

In my bag, I ALWAYS have my back-up camera. I now have the Canon 6D, but always carry my 50D just in case. My lenses that I always carry are my Canon 85mm 1.8, Canon 50mm 1.4, and my Canon 24-70 2.8. My Canon 85mm is most always on my camera. I also have my Flash, I still have the 480EX II, but I'm getting ready to upgrade. Oh, and we cannot forget batteries.....lots of batteries!

Feedback

My advice for anyone trying to photograph a picture like this is to get out there and take risks! I love nature, and love photographing it! Be prepared, it was summer...but it was freezing. I believe it was around 28 degrees this particular morning, and I waited for almost 2 hours for this shot. You have to be patient....and even when you think you have gotten the perfect shot, shoot another one, then MOVE to another location to get a different perspective.
