I know that it sounds lame to just say that I like everything about this image, but that was my first thought.

I can't say enough about this photo. It instantly hits me with sadness, yet there is something so strong and determined in this young one's face. Lighting is awesome. I just so like this one!

Location
This image was taken next to an empty building just down the street from my home.Time
Early evening as the sun was going down and shadows were getting long.Lighting
Shot with existing, natural light backlighting the subject. I neglected to bring a reflector, so I had to brighten her face slightly in post processingEquipment
Nikon D3, Nikkor 105mm 2.8 @ f2.8 1/1600 handheld, no flashInspiration
After taking our happy, pretty portraits my daughter sat down on the curb and just looked miserable (it was cold!) and I decided to capture her mood. Very often I start a shoot with one idea in mind, and then flow into another concept if the subject leads that way. In this case, she was cold and tired, and looked so forlorn so I enhanced the "alone/abandoned" feeling of the image with the gritty, urban setting and back lighting.Editing
Color correct/sharpen/levels are what is normal for me, and on this image I also dodged and burned quite a bit to brighten her face and the details in her dress, as well as add the vignette to bring attention to the subject. In my camera bag
Nikon D800 or D3, and I almost always have my Nikkor 24-70mm 2.8 and Nikkor 70-200mm 2.8 with me as well as an SB600 speedlight, though I rarely use it. My most recent purchase and new favorite lens is the Nikkor 85mm 1.4.Feedback
Even if you begin a shoot with a certain vision in mind, don't be afraid to let your subject lead you into a new vision that may be even better. Especially when working with children, following their lead tends to result in better photos than trying to force them to comply with your original idea.
