Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken from our boat, 8km offshore from Aldinga Beach, South Australia. Being a self-taught photographer every shot is an exciting opportunity for me.

Time

We left shore about 10am and cruised around for about half an hour before we met our first dolphin pod.

Lighting

The water so so beautifully calm and blue. The sun had not reached overhead yet, it was about 10.30 - 11am, mid-summer, and it was very bright! I seriously thought the sun would bounce of the lens not allowing me to cature below the water. I don't get many exciting opportunities to shoot wildlife in their natural surroundings so I had make make my-self stay calm and take the time to get the right setting. I tried a few and in the end the sport setting was about the best. It allowed the shot to be taken throught he water at speed while allowing the natural light to come through just enough.

Equipment

This photo was shot with my Canon 5D with a Canon 18-55mm Lens. We went out on the boat to fish and I carry my Canon 5D with the 18-55mm attached with me all the time 'just in case'.

Inspiration

I love dolphins (I think most people do) and to have the opportunity of watching them in their natural habitat and to be able to capture amazing shots of them under and above the water is fantastic. It was a real experience trying to capture them while moving over the water in a boat. I laid down on top of the cabin at the front of the boat hooked my feet around the rails, my husband tied the anchor rope around my ankles and got as far over the side as I could. They were jumping up touching me to investigate - it really was exhilarating!

Editing

I didn't have to do a lot of post-processing. Because they were taken 'on the move' I had to straighten some images and a few I tidied up the colour.

In my camera bag

I usually carry my Canon 5D with the 18-55mm lens in my 'hand-bag'. It's still small enough to carry about and good enough to capture amazing shots :)

Feedback

Be ready! Pick your days to go dolphin watching; I find mornings are the best time to meet these amazing creatures. I'm not a fisherman, but the sea appears calmer and the light seemed easier to work with in the morning.
