Fort Rock is a volcanic tuff ring, formed 100,000 years ago from magma that bubbled up from the ground. The area was covered by a giant lake, that is now called Fort Rock Lake. The lake eventually dried up and volcanic activity stopped. Fort Rock soon became a beacon for early Native Americans traveling in the area. Archeologists discovered ancient artifacts inside Fort Rock Cave. The artifacts included sandals woven from sagebrush bark. The sandals are between 9,200 and 10,500 years old, which is some of the earliest evidence for human occupation in North America.
