Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on Lake Baikal in the Small Sea Strait. As always, I spend the winter months with my camera on the ice of Lake Baikal in search of amazing stories.

Time

Winter landscapes of Lake Baikal can be photographed all day long. Low sun gives shadows and low contrast. But best of all is the time before sunset, when the maximum volume appears in the composition.

Lighting

In my landscape photography, I use available natural light. Therefore, sunlight, clouds are the main instruments. Naturally, their properties do not depend on my desire. And the main secret is to choose the right time, angle. Sometimes you have to wait or choose another day to shoot with more suitable conditions.

Equipment

For such scenes, I use CANON 60D SLR cameras with a Sigma 10-20 wide-angle zoom lens / Allows you to manipulate perspective distortion and composition in a wide space, work perfectly with objects in the foreground and middle ground.

Inspiration

I am inspired by the magical ice of Lake Baikal, transparent, stimulating the nerves, riddled with billions of cracks. Islands and rocks, sky, mountains in the background. This gives ample creative opportunities for creating landscape scenes.

Editing

I usually use tonal and color correction for post-processing, cropping in Adobe Lightroom. Sometimes I do a quick edit in Picasa

In my camera bag

Over the years as a landscape photographer, I have developed my standard set of tools that are always in my backpack. This is a Canon 60D camera with a wide-angle lens, a Canon 1D mark II camera with a telephoto lens, a spare camera, a set of batteries, ND and gradient filters, several lensballs of different diameters, a 50 mm lens for specific creative shooting, tripods. Writing equipment is always in my SUV, as needed, I complete my backpack.

Feedback

In my personal experience, there is no universal advice for photographers. Each photo is the result of a process of projecting personal experience, life views through the landscape. Naturally, it is necessary to constantly work on the composition, lighting and color solutions. Find and develop your own style. The main thing is to love your work and not let your inner critic sleep.
