Location
The family had requested that I try to take a few photos to mark the occasion of my nephew's birth, and the hotel where some of my family was gracious enough to allow us to use a meeting room for a while.Time
Late morning to early afternoon, I can't remember exactly. When a new baby is around, everyone kind of runs on his schedule!Lighting
I didn't have any lights to set up - the main way I adjusted was controlling where people were standing or sitting in relation to the overhead lights.Equipment
This was shot on my Canon Rebel T6i with the Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 lens. I did use a tripod for stabilization - not so essential for this photo, but for others I took that day it helped.Inspiration
This photo was special out of the bunch. This is the first baby in a new generation, and in order to prioritize being together for this time, we've put off a bunch of other family things in this time of COVID. My brother is usually quite self conscious around the camera, but holding his new nephew he let his guard down and the result was a really special moment.Editing
My main focus in post-processing this photo was some general face smoothing and softening, and then adjusting tones to de-emphasize the background. The location wasn't ideal, but I think I at least managed to keep the picture frames, etc from being distracting. In my camera bag
I've really been enjoying using this Sigma lens recently - it's sort of my go-to for a walk around. I will usually throw in a "fun" lens too - like a fisheye or Helios 44 - just to challenge myself to look for subjects that would be enhanced by a different view. I'm getting better about bringing my tripod too.Feedback
I'm not a portrait photographer and I don't usually take pictures of people. But getting a few shots like these that work for me is usually about watching for body language that emphasizes an emotion - and being ready to capture that candid shot.
