Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken on a field, near a village, in Covasna county, Romania.

Time

This was taken on June 07, 2021 at 07:21 AM while I was waiting in my hide for the Bee-eaters to come out and hunt for insects. I remember there was a Greenfinch perching on a plant and after a phew seconds another one came and they start fighting for that spot (I guess). The fight went on for a minute or so after which they both left and 2 Bee-eaters perched on that same spot. I tell you, there was something about that spot :))

Lighting

It was right after the sunrise, in the golden our so the light was very good and I was able to set a high enough shutter speed in order to catch that moment.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D500 with a Nikkor 200-500 mm f/5.6. I also used a Gitzo Mountaineer Carbon tripod with a MOVO GH800 Carbon gimbal head. The photo hide was a Tragopan HOKKI V3.

Inspiration

I'm fascinated about animal behaviour, birds in particular. This is the main goal for me when taking wildlife photos. Sometimes I get it and sometimes I don't but I look for it with every occasion I get.

Editing

I did some basic post-processing like: luminosity, contrast, colours, cropping, noise reduction and sharpness.

In my camera bag

I always take the D500 with the Nikkor 200-500 mm f/5.6 for wildlife photography and sometimes the Nikkor 16-35 mm f/4 and Nikkor 105 mm f/2.8.

Feedback

Most of the time I plan my shots, I know what I want to obtain, but sometimes, like in this case, the moment just happened without any warning. So in situations like this, you have to be prepared mentally, to be ready to react, to be able to find the proper settings while looking through the lens because the moment could be very short so if you look to your camera display to find the settings, you might miss the moment and in my opinion this is the one of the worst things that could happen to a photographer. Another thing I would recommend is to learn how to look through you camera keeping both eyes opened. This way, you could be prepared if another bird is flying into the shot and you could obtain an interesting interaction. A good knowledge about animal behaviour is also recommended. Have fun, and remember: keep your eyes, mind and hart opened.
