Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at Ashness Jetty on Derwentwater in the English Lake District.

Time

I went out with my son who has just got a CSC and is keen to learn photography. We wanted to catch a long exposure evening sunset so we went out about 9 pm on a July summer evening.

Lighting

The lighting was natural but the 10 stop ND filter helped bring out the reflection in the lake.

Equipment

I shot the picture with a Nikon D750 fitted with a 35mm prime lens. I used a Kase 10 stop ND filter and tripod.

Inspiration

I love the Lake District National Park, it does not have huge mountains but the landscape is beautiful having been shaped by nature and farming. I was itching to try out my new ND filter and the lakes seemed the ideal subject.

Editing

The processing consisted of some minor tweaks in Lightroom then I put it through NIK colour efex software to bring out the details and colours.

In my camera bag

Generally I carry the Nikon D750 and a 24-120mm zoom lens which I support on a monopod. This is great when going on walks in the hills as it is not to heavy or bulky. However, when I have something specific in mind I have a set of Nikon prime lenses and my trusty Gitzo traveller tripod.

Feedback

I can recommend the Kase 10 stop ND filter it is the only one I have found that does not produce a nasty colour cast. Using a tripod and remote release is also essential for this type of shot. You have to remember to switch of the lens image stabiliser when using a tripod and I use mirror lock up for good measure.
