Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo between the pine trees on a farm in Northern Illinois. The bride and groom were getting married on this farm and they walked down the aisle under these lights and between the pines.

Time

It was approximately 7 I believe. It hadn't yet gotten too dark, so I did darken the background a hair more to get the feel of the trees being the only thing that was lit. A storm was approaching fairly quickly at this point so it did infect get a bit darker.

Lighting

I used the natural light around them. It was a bit tricky because we were surrounded in two rows of very large pine trees. I meter for them, and had some light at the edge where I was standing that was falling on them as well. But mostly it was a fairly dark place to shoot. The lights above obviously don't give off much light, but it was enough so I didn't have to up my ISO sky high!

Equipment

I used my Canon 6D camera and I believe my Canon 85mm 1.8. I had no external flashes, or off camera flashes.

Inspiration

The pines are beautiful! With the lights and the framing from my pines, there was no way I wasn't going to use this area! It's really the best part of the farm for weddings. And it was special for the couple because they had walked down between the pines during the procession.

Editing

I did do some post processing. The majority of the post processing I did was darken the background and clone out some of the sky and filled in some of the pines above them. It was still light out, but a major storm was approaching so we had to get this picture at that time, even though it wasn't yet dark enough for my liking. So I darkened the background, and added another string of lights above them, and then some basic S curves and color balance.

In my camera bag

I normally have in my bag my Canon 6D and my Canon 7D along with all prime lenses. My 85 1.8, my 50 1.4, and my 35 2.0.

Feedback

Be prepared to have to do some post processing. What I found most difficult was getting the lighting right for their faces. Under the pines was very dark, and there wasn't much natural light coming from above or from in front. I did ask them to move forward a tad to gather some of the natural light right in from of them. There was a storm approaching so I was also losing a lot of that light as well. Post processing was my friend for this photo. But it was a beautiful moment, and a beautiful place!
