I took this photo in my bedroom after a later afternoon nap with my then three year old twins Luke and James.Time
It was probably around 3 or 4 when the image was taken. It was late afternoon in early fall, it had rained most of the day, and all of us were pretty exhausted from contunious rainy days that year. When the boys woke up they were being so sweet and snuggly that I had to capture the moment the best I could with what I had available before the moment passed, since we all know little ones at this age don't stay put (or LITTLE for that long!}.Lighting
My bed is placed up against to large long windows. We live in an old farm home so our windows are several feet long, but narrow. This particular place in my bedroom also has long narrow windows on the both sides as well. Kind of like a bay window but separated a few feet by the wall. So the light is coming directly from above our heads and directly from either side.Equipment
I shot this with my iPhone actually, on a timer, the only other "equipment" involved was a banana peel that was on my night stand...it held the camera in place, and I had to work and think quick!!Inspiration
It was actually a very quick decision and moment. The boys didn't often sleep in my bedroom, and we had all fallen asleep for a nap that day, which was rather unusual. I got quickly inspired because I wanted desperately to capture the moment with my twins. They don't often get individual time with me, and although they are together, they are each at my side and I knew they both felt the need to have a moment with mom. It just so happened that as the timer went off, James to my left, camera right, was beginning to act silly and placed his hand over his mouth.Editing
I did some post-processing to the photo. I mostly changed the color and I probably needed to straighten it up a little. But I did very light post processing because it was taken with an iPhone I knew the quality would diminish greatly if too much had been done.In my camera bag
I normally carry with me a Canon 6D and Canon 7D, with all Canon lenses. The 35 2.0, 85 1.4, 50, 1.4, and a wide angle.Feedback
My advice if trying to capture something similar is try using your good gear. I had my iPhone handy, but would have preferred if my Canon 6D was more really available to me. This was kind of a moment that was captured quickly and I'm not sure can be reproduced without a lot of effort or an extra hand or two! I was very thank for that banana peel, without the picture wouldn't have been possible!
