Location
This photo was taken in downtown Porto on a little garden in the middle of fast paced city roads. Just that situation gave me a bit of motivation for what I wanted with this photo.Time
I went for a walk on a summer afternoon around town with a friend chasing some good spots for photos. I wasn't getting any luck mainly because of how sunny it was around 3pm and I prefer much more to take portraits with soft light, until I noticed some flowers in a small spot on the ground. The photo was taken June 30th around 4pm.Lighting
I try to make my portraits mainly with natural light but in this case it was difficult because it was very sunny that means very harsh light and I wanted soft looking shadows. I still took with natural light only just adjusted my camera settings to underexpose it and did the rest on editing.Equipment
This was shot on my Canon 6D Mark II with a Canon 24-105mm f/4 L II and nothing else.Inspiration
I was in the mood to take some portraits around city, but normally i'm drawn to nature and greens in my work so i'm always looking for anything of that to use. I saw some flowers on the ground and I immediately thought about putting my friend in the middle of it and do something with it to make it moody and evoke some sort of feeling. That's what i'm all about with portraits.Editing
I underexposed the photo on purpose when I took it so I fixed that and changed the colors to more pastel tones, took down the saturation, played around with the curves to make it more moody and flat and since I used a high shutter speed I blurred a bit more the fallen petals. In my camera bag
The first thing that always goes first is my Canon 6D Mark II. Without it would might aswell not getting out of the house... after it I have my 2 lenses. My main lens which is super versatile and good for whatever I wanna shoot, the Canon 24-105mm f/4 L II. Then my new one and slowly becoming my favourite, the Sigma 35mm f/1.4. After those I have my LED light Aputure Amaran AL-M9 which it's always nice if I need some extra light, my prisma for cool effects, my portable speaker for photoshoots to create some atmosphere and of course my laptop.Feedback
First of all I would suggest to take this shot at dawn or dusk for a similar shot but better straight out of the camera. I first took it without the fallen petals and I liked the simplicity a lot and it showed the mood I wanted it but the petals made it a step further in my vision, I didn't want them to be the main focus but act almost like leading lines to the girl. Other thing is too direct your model in a way it evokes some kind of feeling you want by their body language and use the scenery you have to help with that, for example I used the flowers not only the background but made the model interact with them too.
