Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the district of Madrid, called Ensanche de Vallecas. This was my first summer spent in Madrid and I was researching all the places that were offering interesting architecture that I could shoot. A few fascinating images of this green house popped up during my search and I decided to find this place. While walking around this house and taking photos from different sides and angles I nearly wanted to put my camera down but when I spotted this part of the house, this was going to be my shot.

Time

The shot was taken in the afternoon just before the start of the golden hour. It is one of my favorite images, where everything aligned perfectly: the colors, the lines, the semi-open windows and even lantern.

Lighting

The light on this side of the house was more even, without harsh shadows which allowed me to have even colors and it was just enough to shoot with my telephoto lens not using a tripod.

Equipment

I used Olympus OMD EM-5 MkII with M.Zuiko 40-150 f2.8 PRO lens , a camera that I loved deeply and used for good few years but no longer have right now.

Inspiration

Minimalism, lines, colors, forms and textures drive my vision. I found this color fascinating and wanted to try finding my own perspective of shooting this house.

Editing

In this particular shot the processing was very minimal. I added a bit of contrast, clarity and vibrance and exposure was almost perfect out of the camera.

In my camera bag

At this time my bag stores a Sony A7 III, a workhorse Sony lens 24-105 mm f4, a 12mm f2 Laowa lens with Magic Converter, that I use for architecture and wide angle landscapes and Sony telephoto lens 70-200 f2.8 with 2x teleconverter, that gives me a range of 400mm at the longest edge.

Feedback

If you gravitate towards minimalism and geometrical shapes, your eyes will always spot these things. The best thing I can recommend is just practice your eyes and try to find appealing closeup perspectives. Telephoto lens often helps finding those but do not limit yourself. Remember to keep the lines straight and minimize the perspective distortion as much as possible when taking the shot. Happy shooting!
