Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken whilst on holiday in the Greek Islands and was taken at sunrise from the back of our yacht.

Time

This is one of my favourite photos for good reason; the holiday is one of the best we had as we were skippering a chartered yacht. The morning in question we had moored up at a small island that would normally be classed as a large rock but, my wife and I had woken early with the light streaming through the bedroom porthole. When we looked out there was another yacht close to ours with the sun just rising and it was so tranquil that it brings the memories of the holiday flooding back every time we see it.

Lighting

No special technique or lighting used on this photo as the sheer colour of the sunrise was enough to make it a magical capture for both of us.

Equipment

This was captured on my Nikon D750 with a 35-70 f2.8 handheld.

Inspiration

As mentioned previously, the light was flooding into the yacht at sunrise and it was a case of grabbing the camera to seize the moment before the full light took away the hue in the sky.

Editing

I never really do any post processing other than to crop any unwanted objects out of a photo and maybe brighten or sharpen if it needs it. This one came straight out of the camera so nothing required thankfully.

In my camera bag

I am a bit of a light weight when it comes to carrying equipment as we tend to do a lot of walking so everything is minimalist to be honest. I literally put a 35mm f2 prime lens on my D750 and that's it 95% of the time unless I am on holiday when I take the 35-70mm f2.8 just for a bit of flexibility. Its amazing how little you need when you actually take the time to shoot what takes your fancy.

Feedback

My only advice for taking shots like this is to be out at the crack of dawn or stay out into the golden hour to get the most out of the light conditions. I do try to make the most of my compositions but I take a lot of photos to get a handful I am actually happy with. I tend to know straight away what appeals to me so I take a few shots and then filter out anything I wouldn't want in an album. Overall I love the art of photography and I will keep trying to improve as it gives me so much joy.
