Ready and waiting for wind. I spotted this beautiful vintage Challenge Company windmill on the grounds at the Roosevelt County Fairgrounds, Portales, NM. The mills tow-toned blades immediately caught my attention.
The Challenge Company (founded 1869) of Batavia, IL, emerged as a leading American producer of windmills in the last quarter of the 19th century. Salesmen carried mill samples across the country, telegraphing orders to the home office. The completed mill arrived, via train, to the farmer-rancher ready for assembly on site.
