Isn't the American West spectacular? I come up from N. Cal a couple of times a year for Yellowstone, Glacier, Grand Tetons, Canyonlands, etc. I never get tired of it....

This barn is located on Mormon Row in Grand Teton National Park. Sadly, on the day I was there, they were doing a photoshoot of a supermodel in front of the barn, and every picture I have of the barn has about 15 other people in the photo. I was told not to take pictures of the model. I took several pictures anyway but never saw her face and have no idea who she was. Anyway, beautiful photo, and one which I wish I could have taken myself. There were no bison when I visited but there was a bear in the vicinity!

Behind The Lens

Location

This weathered wood barn is one of several abandoned structures just off a dirt road in Gros Ventre, WY. The fencing around the structures have been pretty trashed by the bison, so I've been able to get buffalo and/or antelope in a few of my shots in Gros Ventre over the years. That's the Grand Tetons in the background

Time

I was out early before sunrise this day, but I was not prepared for anything special. The weather was overcast, with a few snow squalls rolling in early in the morning. But, by mid-morning, the snow showers had stopped and the clouds were starting to break up. By the time of this shot, there were blue patches among the clouds in the west over the Grand Tetons

Lighting

The mid morning sun, to my left, was still partially obscured by clouds. With the western sky partly clear, the lighting was terrific for that time of the day. The sunlight was strong enough to add soft shadows and depth to the objects, but not so much as to wash out the subtle barn colors.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon iD Mark III, using the 24/70 lens. I had been hiking quite a way from my vehicle, and I didn't have my tripod with me...so this is handheld.

Inspiration

I try to get up to this area every autumn, between late September and early October. This old barn was a favorite of mine over the years, particularly with the Tetons in the background. This year, the cottonwoods, as you can see, were in early stages of fall color, and the Tetons had a nice snow cover from a few earlier storms. While walking, I saw a large herd of buffalo coming from the southeast, heading toward the structures. I was hoping they'd cross over by the barn....and some of them did. I wanted to get the Tetons and buffalo as sharp as possible, while focusing on the barn. So, I shot this with the widest depth of field at f/22, with an exposure of 1/600 sec. I sat on the ground and scrunched up to keep the camera as still as possible. I really wish I had carried my tripod with me on this hike! I think I would have had a much sharper overall image.

Editing

For post-processing, I had to work on sharpening the edges for the bison and the Tetons, and I had to lighten the barn wood quite a bit, as the sunlight was directly left of the image and didn't light up the east facing barn enough. The cottonwoods in the near background were not at optimum color, so I lightened up the tree line to allow what yellow-orange colors that were in the leaves to appear more prevalent.

In my camera bag

When hiking, I usually carry the 24/70 lens and either the 70/200 or 100/400 lens for animals. I have circularly polarized filters available for all lenses. In the early days, I didn't carry a tripod, but in the past couple of years, I've strapped one on, and I would absolutely recommend that. It's a pain to haul the tripod around on a hike, but it's indispensable in some lighting situations.

Feedback

If you have the opportunity to visit the Jackson, WY area in the fall, you will find incredible photo opportunities. The weather can be highly changeable, which is a good thing for photographers. For morning shooting, I found it's best to go to Gros Ventre or Oxbow bend for good natural lighting. I would plan to stay out the entire morning. Dress for the changing weather (I seem to always get rained/snowed on out there). And, unlike myself for this shot, make sure you carry a good tripod. You're going to want a large depth of field in these shots, and the lighting is sometimes problematic.
