Praia da Adraga, Portugal

One of the best moments during my trip to Portugal: capturing this amazing sunrise at an arch of Praia da Adraga with the waves coming in at me. Right when shooting this scene I knew this was something special. ...not only because a wave had soaked me good before and left me standing there wet and dripping.

The colors are beautiful. It is amazing how they are purple and pink.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this shot at Praia da Adraga, Portugal.

Time

This was early morning. I had hoped for a nice sunset. Knowing that the sun would come up from the landside I was hoping for some nice indirect light.

Lighting

The light obviously is the main feature in this shot as its amazing colors give an irresistible look to the arch and the incoming waves. I know right away that this shot would be special.

Equipment

I used a Sony a6000 with 12mm Samyang on a Rollei tripod. No filters needed at that moment because the light was not too bright, yet.

Inspiration

The place itself inspired me to take this shot. I took like 60 shots of the incoming waves and always pressed the shutter when the waves were receding. My goal was to get some nice leading lines in the water.

Editing

yes, I did some dodge and burn to work on the contrast. I balanced the colors and made sure the white balance was properly featuring the colors. Then I enhanced the light bleed and put some Orton effect on the breaking waves at the horizon.

In my camera bag

my a6000, or recently a7r2, with 4-6 lenses covering 12mm up to 210mm. Mostly primes.

Feedback

When capturing seascapes I like to play with shutter speeds around 0,4 to 0,6 seconds. Always depends on the speed of the water. That way I get nice structures of the receding waves. Other than that it is timing for sunrise and in the end mere luck to catch colors like that.
