A couple weeks ago, AuroraVixen - Modeling & Cosplay came over, we hadn't seen each other in a while, since the duo shoot with Lady Duvessa in May; so we did some catching up, and decided that we wanted to do something amazing, along with including socks by Sock Dreams for the collaboration I'm doing with them this summer - we aimed for a big spontenous idea.

Behind The Lens

Location

My friend featured in this image (Aurora), my boyfriend and myself went to a park that has a lot of waterfalls near us to shoot this. It was about 5pm when we got there and we stayed for about an hour to complete the shoot.

Time

It was in the afternoon, later in the afternoon, we took a bit to get the head piece styling JUST right.

Lighting

The lighting is a combo of the editing and how the natural light was peeking in, and we had to wait about ten minutes for the lighting to shift to a more overcast style of lighting versus being in direct sun as we had originally started during this shoot.

Equipment

This was shot with my Canon EOS 6D, and with my 50mm f/1.8 II. I don't have or use a lot of gear when I take a photo. Don't have what I can't afford.

Inspiration

We came up with the backstory on the spot, but originally it was because the wardrobe designer is a friend from out of state and she brought all of these different outfits that I wanted to aim to shoot with something that would match with the socks as I'm collaborating with a company that sells them to create artistic work such as this.

Editing

Yes, I did, I basically wanted the model to pop in this, and compared to how it originally started, she was a bit washed out, as was the clothing, so I did some darkening on that, but I didn't want her to be so dark as to lose any details. I also made sure to edit out the seem where the ear and elf ear connected, and I did some tweaking on the horn to adjust one of them higher, as well as some retouching. Masking was the main focus on the editing for this.

In my camera bag

My bag consists (usually) of my Canon EOS 6D, my other half got me a Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM {Medium Telephoto Lens} it's made some of my shots appear almost movie like straight from camera, it's a good lens! I also have my 50mm f/1.8 II (a friend got me a second one after a couple years had passed with me only using one lens), as the first one started to die on me, the images it captures are some of my favorites. I also have my trigger remote for when I bring my tripod along with for shoots, it's not that common I bring it due to not being able to carry it all.

Feedback

Use your imagination, go to anywhere that you feel inspired. Try to aim for overcast, or golden hour for the shots that have the best lighting, try to not overexpose images as it can be hard to bring back details if you don't know how to use the dodge and burn tools in Photoshop, and try to create a character's backstory for your models, it can help them use their imagination, and you can get some unique shots that way.
