Cane cholla (Opuntia imbricata) is a type of cactus, common through most of the southwest - particularly because it is an overgrazing indicator. Also called "jumping cholla" because if you walk within one foot of it, pieces of it seem to "jump out" and attach themselves to your legs. Then it is a "tar baby" situation: if you try to pick it off with your fingers, your fingers get stuck to it and to your leg.
