Location
I took this photo in a downtown alley in Tulsa, Ok. during a senior portrait session.Time
The student I was photographing played many instruments. I found this particular one to be very beautiful and the light in the alley at 5:30pm, along with the textures of the building made for a great contrast.Lighting
This was all natural light. There was no direct sunlight and was set back in an alley, so it was really just the light coming in from the end of the alley.Equipment
I shoot with a Canon 5D Mark iii. This was handheld with I believe my 24-105 f4 lens. No flash or supplementary light other than God's. :)Inspiration
I love the sleek look of woodwind instruments and this one had a great sheen to it. I was drawn to the contrast of its finish next to the ruddy, rough textures of the downtown alley.Editing
I used Lightroom at the time. I sharpened it, made some local adjustments and put a vignette on it.In my camera bag
I found a great small bag that holds my camera and 3 lenses. My go-to's are my Canon lenses - 85m 1.8, 50m 1.8, 24-105 f4, and my Sigma 70-200m 2.8. If I think I'll be using my 70-200 a lot, I carry a monopod because it gets heavy. I have an on-camera flash with a Gary Fong diffuser and if I'm doing outdoor portraits, I have two Godox TT600 Flashes that I use off-camera with light boxes on stands.Feedback
I love to use natural light whenever possible. I've learned to add supplemental lighting, but I try not to. So I typically like the lower f-stop lenses. I'm always observing the details of my environments - colors, textures, shadows, etc. Diversity always creates interesting photographs.
