Behind The Lens

Location

Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada, comes from the native word Tk'emlups: 'the joining of rivers', where the South Thompson and North Thompson rivers meet to become The Thompson, and we live about 10 minutes from this location on the North Thompson.

Time

at dawn, in late Autumn

Lighting

letting the river's reflection tell the viewer what's going on in the sky makes for a more dramatic presentation of the scene

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D5300, with a 35mm f/1.4 prime lens, ISO 100, 0.8 shutter speed, F/16 aperture, and with a tripod.

Inspiration

when the river is warmer than the air and has mist rising from its early morning surface, I know it is a good time to go out and see if I am able to bring the viewer all the special moodiness of nature in the chill air of Autumn in our part of Canada.

Editing

I developed the raw files in Lightroom. I pulled down my highlights - 100, shadow +100, whites -21, black -69. I also adjusted the color using split toning.

In my camera bag

My Nikon D5300 body, 18-55mm kit lens, 35mm f/1.4 prime lens, Nikon 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR, colored filters, ND filters, and polarizing filter,

Feedback

Leaving the house early enough to first select a good site and then get set up before the dawn progresses too quickly and the atmospheric elements get overpowered by too much sun is my best advice.  The magical times of day are fleeting and the photographer's opportunities tied to a small time window.
