Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a local club night in Preston, UK. They are held weekly and the purpose is to network with fellow togs and models and basically try out new lighting ideas, poses with input from all involved

Time

This was an evening shoot but as it was a studio it didn't really matter

Lighting

The lighting was done with a soft box straight on to the model, slightly raised and angled down along with a silver reflector held just below the models shoulder level

Equipment

I shot this on my Canon 6D using a Canon 70-200 F2.8 lens at around 150mm borrowed from another photographer at the event ... with his permission of course

Inspiration

The inspiration came from witnessing what the other togs were doing at the event. Looking at the shots they were lining up and thinking how they could be modified to achieve different looks but without altering the lighting. It was encouragement from another photographer to try the longer lens that really made the shot.

Editing

Post processing was just the usual clean ups associated with headshots, the glow around the eyes was actually the models makeup. The silver reflector really enhanced this.

In my camera bag

Usually I am carrying my Olympus E-M1 and primes, on this occasion I had my Canon 6D with me along with 50mm and 85mm f1.8's and my Tamaron 24-70 F2.8 ... the 70-200 was borrowed

Feedback

Don't be afraid to push right in with a longer lens, given the right lighting it works really well.
