This photo was taken for my daughters fourth birthday in prayers for Maria sunflower field. This is an absolutely beautiful field of 500 acres of sunflowers that was planted in honor of Maria, a child who died of a rare cancer. There are boxes where you can leave a donation if you visit the field and the money is donated to research to help other children and people suffering from the same ailments. Sunflowers are a sign of faith as they turn towards the light and that is what my daughter does.Time
This was shot at about 2 pm which is honestly one of the worst times to shoot but my saving grace was a few storm clouds that rolled in giving me just enough time to snap enough photos of her to make me happy.Lighting
I shoot with only natural light and my best advice is to utilize anything you can to create shade for yourself if you are stuck in a situation where you stuck in less then idea lighting situations. In this particular situation I lucked out with the storm clouds and the tall sunflowers creating a beautiful shade around her.Equipment
I used a canon 5d mark iii with a sigma art 50 mmInspiration
My daughter was turning four in a few days and I wanted to get photos in the sunflower field while they were so perfect. It had always been one of my dreams to shoot in a field like that and I couldn't think of a more perfect situation then her birthday. A few days later they wilted and I was so grateful that we went when we did.Editing
Absolutely! I love making a photo (especially of children) as magical as I see it in my head. I added a sky overlay as it was quite overcast that day and did quite a few adjustments in photoshop with curves and dodging and burning. In my camera bag
Although I have lots of gear that I love, I never leave home without my 5d mark iii, canon 85 1.2, sigma art 50, and canon 70-200Feedback
Use your imagination. Children are magical and you should let your heart and mind take your somewhere special with your photography. Talk to them. My daughter loves rainbows and all things girly so I wanted to incorporate that into her photos.
