Behind The Lens

Location

Well, I'm a self-taught photographer (school is an unfortunate challenge with multiple autoimmune diseases [RA, Adrenal insufficiency, Fibromyalgia...the list goes on]), but I've always wanted to learn more so I took a 1-day class at my local Samy's to test the waters. I cannot say I, personally, learned anything from the class portion (although fantastic) but LOVED the time scheduled to shoot with a modeling student. We headed over to some nearby train tracks late in the day and I stayed back from the crowd -always looking for that different view. I wanted to use the angle of the tracks in my shot (not just the model and her scarf, which was the project) to compliment the lines and angles created by the subject and to provide a bit of mystery.

Time

It was late afternoon so the sun was still bright, but starting to get that soft warmth that makes you smile at the end of the day.

Lighting

The light is one of my favorite elements in this shot. It was late afternoon, allowing the sun to perfectly light the subject with a reflector and still show texture in her scarf while providing some beautiful backlighting.

Equipment

This shot was taken handheld from roughly 10 meters away with my Nikon D600 & Nikkor 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 kit lens believe it or not.

Inspiration

As cliché as it may sound- the moment. I "saw" an image that wasn't there just yet and waited patiently for the elements to align just right...then "click"...I froze the hands of time.

Editing

I don't have much post processing experience (though I want to learn), but I do tweak most of my images a little. I try to keep them as natural looking as possible so mainly stick to a little dodging, burning, adjusting exposure if needed, and sharpening. Though, for this image I did apply a black and white filter in Lightroom with lots of contrast and adjust the levels a little...and then of course remove some stray hairs that were on her face because of the wind.

In my camera bag

Even when it comes to my camera equipment I'm a total girl and probably carry too much gear, LOL! As far as lenses are concerned I always carry my Nikkor 50mm f1.8, a trusty telephoto like the Nikkor 35-105mm or Nikkor 70-300mm and my Micro-Nikkor 105mm f2.8. A tripod and reflectors are always within reach, as well as chargers, backup batteries & memory cards. I've also got a notebook I keep in my bag to jot down inspiration or to sketch out ideas.

Feedback

Don't try to force something that isn't there. Feel the moment and the energy around and within you. Connect with your subject and you won't be disappointed.
