Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo while walking the beach in Traverse City, Michigan.

Time

This was taken during sunset. Slightly past when sun crossed over the horizon.

Lighting

This area is probably the area I've shot the most and everyday it seems to be its own magical lightshow. I've been told it has something to do with being on the 46th parallel.

Equipment

I used Canon 5DSR, Canon 16-35 2.8 II with Singh-Ray 5 Stop ND filter and a Gitzo tripod.

Inspiration

While walking down the beach I had just stumbled across this and had sparked an idea in my head and just started going with it.

Editing

There was 5 photos total for this image. 4 for the lower half and 1 for above the horizon. I first did color balance, shadows and highlights in Capture One then brought them in to Photoshop. With the bottom 4 I focused stacked them with auto-blend then went thru manually and fixing to my own liking. I added more height to the canvas and selected the sky layer and moved it so it was aligned with the bottom photo afterwards masked out everything from the peninsula and below. Added some micro contrast using a few levels with luminosity masks and slight color adjustments with curves in LAB color mode. Finished off with high pass sharpening on the plank.

In my camera bag

At the time I had the Canon 16-35 2.8 II which has now been replaced with the Zeiss Distagon 15mm with Singh-Ray polarizer and firecrest 165 plates of 3,6 and 10 stop ND Filter and 3 stop Graduated. I also carry the Canon 70-200 2.8 II with 2x extender. A Canon 100mm macro and Canon 24-70 2.8 II.

Feedback

Before coming out that evening I knew I wanted to some kind of perspective shot. While walking I found this small wooden plank that washed up from a huge storm over 6 months before. With the wide angle I wanted to exaggerate two things in this shot one was to make the plank and the other was the peninsula. I had pointed the camera so just a little bit of the horizon was showing and then moved the lens up so just a portion of the horizon was at the bottom of the photo. While on the lower section of the photo I had started the focus on the first line of the dock and moved the focus back in 3 other locations.
