Behind The Lens

Location

I've hiked larch mountain 3 times that year, I love it because of it's silence, It's so quiet that you don't even hear your foot steps, Kinda creepy actually, But it's so peaceful at the same time, So in November the road closes for the winter, And my dad has never been up there before, So instead of hiking the 6 miles from Multnomah Falls, We took the road, This would be my dad's first time at Larch Mountain, And my first time on larch Mountain by taking the road instead of the 14 Mile round trip hike, It was a mostly cloudy day, And the summit is at 4000 feet, So we were bound to drive in the fog, As we got higher and higher, It got foggier and foggier, There was this one curve, After that curve we all of a sudden left the fog, I looked in the mirror and saw this amazing site, Stopped the truck as quickly as possible, I had the camera already set on the tripod so all i needed to do was grab and run, I quickly got it set up, And took as many shots as i could, I knew it wasn't gonna last long, It was so quiet, Little droplets of water falling down the trees, Birds chirping, The smell of pine and dirt mixing in the air, How nice it was! But about 10 minutes later, It has begun to go away, It was one of the most beautiful God Rays i've ever seen, And ended up being my best photo, It was an amazing day!

Time

Decided to go to Larch mountain around 3-4PM, And the photo was taken at 5:07PM PST

Lighting

It's hard to describe the feeling of seeing such amazing rays of light, You just don't see this too often, Especially the way it was that day, I reacted quickly before it went away, I wanted the road to draw you in to the scene, Along with trees on each side of the frame, It was one of the most beautiful moments i've ever seen in my life, And probably will ever see.

Equipment

Ravelli tripod with a Vanguard TBH-100 Ball head, Sony A58 and 18-55mm kit (See, Camera gear doesn't matter, It's what you do with it that counts) It's a very simple setup but it did the job.

Inspiration

How will you not be inspired to shoot something like this? You may never see it again for either years, Or the rest of your life, It's just so peaceful up there.

Editing

I've done quite a bit of processing, The fog was originally white, At first i thought about keeping the fog the way it is, But i just knew the photo had a lot fo potential, It didn't feel how i wanted it to feel, I warmed up the image, Brought down the saturation, And used some graduated filter's and brush strokes to adjust the tones of the trees and the road.

In my camera bag

Back when this photo was taken, Just the tripod and the A58 with the lens and shutter release cable, I recently switched to Nikon, D7200 with the 18-55 and 55-300 kit, Upgraded my tripod to a Vanguard VEO 235AB and the VEO 37 shoulder bag.

Feedback

Just go out, Explore, You never know what you're gonna get, An amazing landscape photo may take Months, or Years to capture, On your first trip call it a scouting run, Find the best possible locations, When you get home do your research, Find the best time, The best season, The best day, The best weather conditions, As much information as you can, When the time is right, Go and take it, But some times that WOW shot can come out of nowhere, You have to know what you want out of the photo as fast as possible before it's too late, Take your camera anywhere you go, And make sure it's ready when ever you need it to be ready.
