Location
This image was taking in a natural light studio here in Iowa.Time
This particular image was shot mid afternoon. I almost always shoot in the evening however I had to adjust the time of the shoot to make sure the lighting was as best as it could be.Lighting
I wanted this shot to have a lot of contrast. I love showing lots of contrast when babies are in their dad's hands. I'm a natural light photographer so the only light source I used was a large window which is off to the right of the image. Since I wanted a lot of contrast I purposely set my client close to the window.Equipment
I used a Nikon D700 and a 24-70 2.8 for this shot.Inspiration
I love images of babies in their dad's hands. Dad's hands are usually large, rugged, and strong. Babies are tiny, soft and delicate. I love the contrast in the 2 objects. I also love the bond between a father and baby. To me images like this show that even the strongest of the strong can be so sweet and soft.Editing
My black and white images I do solely in Lightroom. I turn them black and white, add contrast, brighten up the skin with the color sliders, and sometimes add some warmth with split toning. In my camera bag
I don't have anything fancy in my bag. My camera, lens, a back up battery, a back up memory card, and a grey card.Feedback
First and foremost baby safety! Never never never try to pose a baby like this without a spotter. I did not have to do a composite on this particular image as dad's hands where acting as a stabilizer for the baby. What you can't see in the image is that there is a pillow in dad's lap and mom's hands are literally just outside the frame just inches away. Some babies also will not cooperate and that's ok. Newborn sessions can take anywhere from 2-4 hours depending on the baby. Slow down and take your time. Baby safety and comfort level should always be your number one priority.
