Location
This photo was captured in Yellowstone National Park in the area called grand prismatic spring.Time
Image was captured later in the afternoon which gave a little more subtle sunlight and created stronger colors for the image.Lighting
The lighting for this image was perfect due to the amount of clouds and how they diffused the strong sunlightEquipment
This was taken with my Canon 1DMark-2 and a 24-70 2.8 lens. Also I used a Graduated Neutral Density Filter for the area in the horizon.Inspiration
What visually caught my attention was the strong colors and contrastEditing
I do all I can to capture the best and highest quality image within my camera. Post processing primarily consist of adding sharpness if needed, a little vibrance and if needed, color-temp correctionIn my camera bag
My bag consists of my 1DMark-2 with three backup batteries, 40D with four backup batteries, 100mm 1.8 macro, 24-70-2.8, 70-100-2.8, several memory cards(10+), tripod mounts, lens cleaners, filters, remote triggers, light meter and flashFeedback
When doing any type of landscape photography I always recommend using a tripod for stability. I also always use the timer on the camera (usually only 3sec) or my remote trigger. When capturing scenic images I always compose the horizon either low if the emphasis is whats above the horizon/background or higher horizon if emphasis is the foreground like this image. Look for leading lines that visually guide your vision through the image. The lines in this image guide you left then right in a zigzag pattern taking you from the foreground to the background.
