Location
This photo is taken in the Lake District National Park, United Kingdom. The image is shot around Lake Coniston (pier location: east bank, approaching Brantwood) and this is where I grew up. For anyone wanting lakes in 21 different ways, this national park has a great offering.Time
An early evening capture allowed for still waters, reflections and different hues in the sky.Lighting
The right light is essential to capture reflections, a sort of middle ground will light the scene without creating a 'shine' on the water and destroying any reflections.Equipment
As my first attempt at stitching photographs together I used a tripod and my Sony DSLR with an 18-55mm lense and then merged three images in photoshop.Inspiration
When this photo was taken I was growing into my photographic style, thinking carefully about colours in particular. Use what you have on your doorstep an for me, this is whats available. A really inspiring landscape.Editing
Post-processing consisted of stitching three images together and creating a cinematic, panoramic theme which stretches well into my current portfolio with both landscape and cityscape images using this technique. To shift my colour pallete towards purples and blues I used filters and balanced levels and curves. In my camera bag
Always a spare memory card and water! Researching your locations and understanding the types of shots you want to take is important. In the time since I took this photo I’ve learnt this. One will allow you to trek across country or navigate London on foot, finding interesting photographic opportunities along the way. The other, will allow you to shoot RAW files all day. Besides this I carry a small tripod, either Sony or Canon DSLR and a small number of lenses. Preparation and research suits me better than being weighed down with equipment.Feedback
Wide images will show up mistakes, make sure your image is straight. A good vantage point is essential. Stitching shots together will allow you to be on the shoreline, with minimal obstructions. Printing this image required 3 test prints (I gave these away as gifts) before committing to a much larger print on Hahnemuhle pearl paper and satin finish to preserve and soften colours. My advice to all photographers is to use a certain shot to inform your style and branch off from there.
