Love it, would like to see a version just a bit brighter to really highlight the skin tones and blue tones.

Location
This photograph of Mary was taken on a small islet called Moku Nui, just off the coast of Lanikai Beach in Kailua.Time
The afternoon.Lighting
I usually shoot in natural sunlight. For this portrait, I had an assistant reflect natural sunlight onto my model to give the overall effect of flash/in-studio lighting.Equipment
This was shot with my Canon Rebel T4i, without a tripod or flash, just a reflector.Inspiration
I was shooting a small project and I wanted to use a location that was unfamiliar to most people, but familiar to those who have visited Moku Nui before (better known as Na Mokulua Islands). A small group of us boated and anchored near the shore break. We actually had to swim from the boat to get to shore (most people access by kayak, longboard, or SUP); my camera equipment was in a dry bag which was pulled to shore on a body board. Because the islet was not easily accessible, I opted to shoot with very little equipment (just a reflector) and work in natural sunlight as usual (no flash). I wanted to create a portrait that was very clean with dramatic lighting as if being shot in studio. We had very harsh sunlight that day, so we were able to achieve that look.Editing
I usually spend a lot of time editing portraits, however, this image required very little editing. I used Photoshop to correct the exposure, edit skin, even out skin tones. Then used Lightroom to apply my color treatment, which was then applied to the rest of the images from this series. In my camera bag
In the last few years, I've used a Canon Rebel T4i & rented other camera body's for commission work. But I most recently updated to a Canon Mark II. I always prefer shooting with my 85mm prime lens and 50mm prime lens for portraits. However, I also keep my zoom lenses, 18mm-55mm and 18mm-200mm, with me as my backup lenses. I shoot in natural sunlight, so I have reflectors and reflector stands with me at every shoot.Feedback
If you're shooting on location outdoors, then you must always be prepared for spontaneous weather changes and educate yourself on locations near the water, especially if you're shooting IN the ocean (this was shot in a tide pool with crashing waves around us). Understand your environment; if you're not familiar with the location, then bring someone with you that can educate and assist you. Water shoots are so fun to do, but requires a lot of work and patience when you're trying to collaborate with nature (waves, water, wind, sun, etc.) while also directing your model and assistant. There are a lot of factors that may influence new ideas while you're on a shoot, so keep an open mind and let your creativity run wild. Sometimes, the best shots are spontaneous. And when shooting outdoors, you can only control so much! So have a clear vision of what you'd like to accomplish, but also be inspired to collaborate with nature... that's my favorite part about shooting near the ocean, especially in a place I can call my home.
