Behind The Lens

Location

In South Orange County, California. I went out to capture some shots of the band "Roah Summit".

Time

It was an indoor concert that started at 9pm.

Lighting

Since it was a concert, I had to rely on stage lighting. I compensated by shooting at f1.2.

Equipment

I used a Canon 5D Mark III paired with their 85mm f/1.2L lens.

Inspiration

I loved the texture of the stone wall, the natural frame from the entrance and how I knew the light and bokeh would make the subject stand out. I basically waited for him to be in the right light with the background just right.

Editing

I work in Adobe Lightroom for white balance, cropping, tone, and sharpening by default. This image didn't need any more than that.

In my camera bag

When I need to travel light and carry just 1 bag, i try to keep it simple. A Canon 5D Mark IV, a Canon 70-200mm f2.8L, a Canon 16-35mm f2.8L, a Canon 50mm f1.4, and a Canon 2X Extender.

Feedback

When shooting concerts, flash or strobe lights are rarely allowed. If it's very dark, It's best to have a lens that lets you shoot as wide open as possible to get the most light into the sensor. I usually carry my 50mm f1.4 for such an occasion if I can get close. When that's not the case, I carry fall back on my 85mm f/1.2L. When the concert lighting is adequate, I prefer to use my 70-200mm f2.8L. It's the fastest and sharpest option in my gear case. Once the equipment meets your needs, focus on capturing an image where the subject is performing and in their element. This could be the way they play their instrument, or hold the microphone. The rest is up to how you capture them in the available light.
