Behind The Lens

Location

The church is located by Fish Creek, Saskatchewan not far from Batoche which is the historic site of the Louis Riel Rebellion in the late 1800's. It is approximately 90 Km from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

Time

The photo was taken at the end of January on a warm, late winter afternoon about an hour before sunset

Lighting

Winter in Saskatchewan features short crisp days with early sunsets so the sun was low in the sky even with it being 4 PM in the afternoon. The low sun and cloud cover helped create an interesting glow on the building and surrounding snow.

Equipment

The photo was shot with a Canon 60D using Sigma DC 17-50mm lens with an ND filter.

Inspiration

I love decaying and old buildings and was told that this church would make an interesting subject.

Editing

I used DxO OP, Lightroom and Photoshop to enhance the sky and overall image.

In my camera bag

Canon 60D, Sigma and Canon lenses as well as filters depending on light conditions

Feedback

Take as many shots as you can from close up and far away. Go to the location as many times as you can to catch different seasons and light conditions. Don't forget to look around, there might be other things in the area that are even more interesting and unnoticed by others. Most of all, have fun getting out finding things you hadn't noticed before.
