Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo up in my sons room as he was sitting watch the Hulk.

Time

It was late afternoon in winter, just after dinner time. His room was very dark with the blinds closed. It is not often I get an opportunity to take a picture of my son where he is not trying to pull some funny face. I went up to check on him, and the way he was sitting, and the way the televisions light was hitting his face I just thought, 'yep that will take a belting picture'. I basically had to sneak into his room and take a few snaps.

Lighting

This light was coming direct from the television. The television is up quite high on his wall so its facing downwards. There was no other light used.

Equipment

Canon 700D, 50-200mm Lens

Inspiration

Its not often I get a photo where my son is just sitting. I love abstract portraits, anything where people are looking anywhere but directly at the camera. The lighting, the way he was sitting, the concentration in his eyes and face, just seemed to work.

Editing

Using Lightroom I fiddled with the exposure a bit, and darkened the back slightly more to bring his face out further.

In my camera bag

Canon 700D, 50-200mm Lens, 50-100mm lens, filters of all different colours and flash.

Feedback

I had to be sneaky to catch this one. If my son had known I was there I wouldn't have been able to get the same sort of intensity out of him. I find that with most of these abstract portraits the sneaky you are the better. I often will wander off when I am down the beach and then sneak back and try and catch people 100% natural. I take about 10 - 15 pictures changing the aperture and the position I am holding the camera (ie landscape vs portrait). I try and move around as much as I can without giving the game away.
