Location
This image, "Tufa at Sunrise," was captured at South Tufa on Mono Lake in October 2015.Time
This image captures the awesome light just before sunrise.Lighting
The tufa formations at Mono Lake provide an other-worldly landscape. I took this image to capture the stark beauty of the tufa, the warm pre-dawn light and the wonderful reflections in the still water.Equipment
This image was captured using a Canon 5D Mark III, a 24-70 f/2.8L II USM lens, Manfrotto tripod with Really Right Stuff headInspiration
I was looking for a place to juxtapose the jagged tufa formations with the soft pre-dawn light and to highlight the stillness of the water.Editing
Many sunrise images require a great deal of post-processing. However, this image almost made itself. All that was required was slightly lightening the tufa formation in Adobe Lightroom and some slight cropping. In my camera bag
When shooting landscapes I always have my Canon 5D Mark III, Canon 24-70 f/2.8L II lens, Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS II lens, Canon 16?35mm f/2.8L III, various Singh-Ray ND filters, a Singh-Ray circular polarizer, Manfrotto tripod with Really Right Stuff ball head, Canon remote release.Feedback
Many photographs have been made at South Tufa at Mono Lake. The key to this image was waiting for the right conditions. Patience as well as good technique is essential for landscape photography.
