Two years ago, I started to organize photo workshops for new photographers who are willing to experience this type of photography: "Boudoir". I make all the arrangements with models, make-up artist and the hairstylist and then I take four or five new photographers and I teach them how to select a theme for their shooting, best location, the most suitable model/models and a great team of make-up artist and hairstylist. Then I show them how important the communication with the model is or which are the most useful lighting schemes for their photos. This particular photo was made during one these workshops, where I make some photos and then I ask the other, either to reproduce the photo or to improvise based on those photos.Time
It was made quite late in the evening when natural light was not available at all. So the light used for this photo comes from a studio flash.Lighting
Although I was using an artificial light generated by a studio flash, I decided to use a beauty dish with a honeycomb grid placed on it, in order to direct the light only on that desired area.Equipment
One week before making this photo, I bought a new Nikon D750 camera and I was so willing to use it for such type of photography. Together with Nikon 24-70 mm f/2.8 lens the results were those that I expected to obtain. As for the light, I used only one flash.Inspiration
When you do this kind of photography, simply the beauty of the model becomes an inspiration not only for the photographer but also for your team of make up and hair styling. It is absolutely amazing how many great ideas can be generated simply by the way your model looked like when she smiles.Editing
Shooting only in Raw format, I am somehow obliged to get all my photos through Photoshop. For this photo, I've also applied a Silver Efex Pro add-on from Nik Software, which in my opinion is the best add-on for black&white photos. In my camera bag
I always carry a back-up camera beside my main Nikon D750. So a Nikon D7100 is to be found on my bag together with a set of lenses, including Nikon 24-70 mm f/2.8, a Sigma 70-200 mm f/2.8 a 35 and 50 mm, both f/1.8. I have also 2 Nikon SB900 flashes with a nice set of wireless trigger and receivers, so I can use both flashes off camera.Feedback
Boudoir or Lingerie photography is not quite suitable for everybody. But it doesn't mean that any photographer shouldn't try it someday. With a great deal of self trust, good communication skills, a huge amount of courage and very good lighting techniques, you can obtain very good results. Good luck and good light to everyone!
