I approached the rocky beach area with my camera and tripod in hand, after looking through hundreds of photos of the tree online, I knew the shot that I wanted to achieve. There were three other photographers there when I arrived, but they all left within minutes, discouraged by the cloudy, grey sky. I persevered as this was my only chance to get the shot I wanted, and I got it.

Location
This photo was taken on my first trip to one of my favourite cities, Wanaka, on New Zealand's South Island.Time
This shot was taken during sunset, but it was on a very overcast dreary day. I remember there being two other photographers at the shore when I arrived, but they did not stick around as the sky was not developing into anything special. I knew as I was shooting that it would need to be black and white, and I am glad I stuck around!Lighting
The cloudy conditions created a very even, and interesting scene.Equipment
This images was captured with a Nikon D610, 24-70 2.8 on a tripod with a polarizing filter.Inspiration
I had seen many images, even back in 2015 of this particular tree, standing alone in the water, and I loved the simplicity at first glance.Editing
I converted the raw to black and white, did some basic slider adjustments, and a local brush over the tree itself. In my camera bag
I always have my D850 with me, and when I travel it generally has the 24-70 2.8 attached to it. I also carry to 70-200 f4 to save weight but still have a longish lens, and a 50mm 1.4 for when I feel creative. I also keep a variable ND filter, polarizer and 13 stop ND for those long exposures, any time of day. As annoying as it is, I do try and always have a tripod with me. For long hikes, I will bring the Gorrilapod, but it is not my favourite. The full sized tripod is worth the sore back most of the time. I also have a little lightweight beanbag that allows me to put my camera on a rock or branch and have some control of my lens angle to get creative low shots.Feedback
Patience is key for these kinds of shots. Try and make time to stay in an area for more than just a few minutes, so that you get too see how the light moves and hits your subject. Also watch for any changes in the scene (the birds on the tree).
