Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taking on a piece of land out in the country. I was trying to teach my new friend some light painting techniques and I was able to create a series of images similar to this.

Time

We started shooting this image roughly 30 minutes prior to sunset so we could figure out the composition we liked and get our setup ready to go. As soon as the sun fell below the horizon I started and this was one of the first images produced.

Lighting

Lighting was kept super simple during this shoot. I had 2 Canon 580EXII but only used one until it over heated then started using the second one switching back and forth. I would say we popped the flash anywhere between 10 and 30 times to create the look we liked.

Equipment

Canon 5d III on a tripod with a 2 second shutter delay and off camera flashes.

Inspiration

I received a random message from someone one day wanting to know how I did my night photography so I ventured out to show him and I'm so glad we created this because it brought my passion back for things I used to shoot that made me happy.

Editing

Typically I raise my shadows until it almost looks faded then I pull my blacks down giving the contrast back and I finish it off with a touch of saturation and vibrance.

In my camera bag

It really depends on what i'm going to shoot that day. On a typical day I have 2 Canon 5d III, a sigma 50mm 1.4, Canon 70-200mm 2.8, Canon 135mm 2.0(my favorite lens by the way) and the Canon 15mm 2.8. I usually have at least 2 Canon 580EXII with me and use cactus triggers to control them.

Feedback

Yes! Find somewhere away from all the light pollution so you can bring in more of the starry night. Plan ahead before the sun goes down so that you aren't trying to fumble around in the dark trying to figure out what you want your picture to look like. Bring a flashlight! Focusing is a pain in the dark, but if you shine a flashlight on your subject and just put your camera on manual focus you can ensure you have a clean, crisp shot every time. Experiment! Don't be afraid to point your flash in different directions and bounce it or reflect it you never know what kind of cool effect could come out in your image. Lastly, wear black. Or at least something dark that way your body doesn't show up in the images when the flash is going off.
