I shot this image with a Canon TS-E 90mm f-2.8 lens on a Canon 5D Mark III. I shot from on the stairs, actually slightly above the band. I deliberately aimed to blur the dancers slightly; I was experimenting with changing the plane of focus so that it runs through the middle of the composition, front to back.
If you look, you'll see that from the tops of the heads of the dancers, and up to about the forehead of the lead guitar player, all the way from front to back – that portion of the image is in focus. Above, and below that middle band, everything is in a varying degree of out-of-focus. In essence, I've turned the focal plane from its normal position of parallel to the camera's sensor, and it is running almost at a right angle to the sensor, instead. This is all done "in camera."
Other aspects of the image were manipulated in Photoshop to give a more painterly appearance, as this image was ultimately printed on a canvas.
