A Spruce Grouse perches on a pine branch just off the ground. It is early Spring, and he is displaying for the females. It's a process of finding a "strutting territory", usually an open area surrounded by woods or thick cover. The male grouse will then fluff out his feathers and strut around in hopes of catching the attention of any nearby females. The grouse, will then fly up to a nearby tree branch close to the ground, also trying to draw attention by the the movement and sound. Shortly after that, he will fly down to the ground again starting the process over.
