Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a farm near South Haven, MN at an annual event put on by the Northern MN Draft Horse Association.

Time

It was mid-day and the drought conditions at the time had the dust flying everywhere!

Lighting

With all the dust in the air on a partly cloudy day, the haze made for some interesting light.

Equipment

My Nikon D5300, using a 18-55mm lens was handheld at this event so I could move around quickly and get out of the way of these powerful animals.

Inspiration

I try to make this event every year with a goal to capture the beauty and power of these horses that are such a huge part of our history.

Editing

Yes, post processing is almost a necessity in this digital age. This photo was taken in 2012 so I don't remember exactly what I did but I usually just play around until it looks right.

In my camera bag

I always have a zoom lens with me, extra batteries and a few filters but at an event that requires a lot of walking and moving around I carry my camera only.
