Location
This photo was taken outdoors, specifically on a wooden dock extending from a beach. So for me, this is an uncontrolled setting where natural light was abundant. I had to adapt with the environment (wind, sunlight, sky, etc.) and this made a big challenge for coming out with a good picture.Time
It was exactly 9:50 A.M., a cloudy, windy day so light was diffused to harsh when the sun shone through.Lighting
This was a spontaneous moment; me and my model, together with the team worked together and did a series of poses until the right moment came. Direct sunlight as the main light, a burst of on-camera flash provided the fill the light. The expression together with a touch of classy, hand placement and a gust of wind made the shot rather timeless.Equipment
My first digital camera – the FUJIFILM S9500, hybrid camera, fixed 28-300mm lens, on-camera flash, tilted LCD screen, on low angle and a stroke of “luck."Inspiration
I always try to achieve something different. The idea just came through and then I directed the model, took the best shot.Editing
In this particular workflow, I converted the jpeg color picture into black and white; adjusted levels, sharpness and clarity. Cropping was not performed with the pictureIn my camera bag
I typically pack light. Only my trusty Fujifilm S9500 from 2009 until 2012 when I acquired the Nikon D7000 body with a Nikon 35mm f/1.8 DX lens for low-light situations, an 18-55mm nikon kit lens for most of my shots and a Yongnuo YN565ex Speedlight. All light-weight and suits my style of shooting.Feedback
Be ready to shoot when moment comes. Capturing expressions is the most important for me. I still believe the “decisive moment” – the right place, right time, right angle, good composition and pre-visualization before capturing the image makes the difference.
