Straight away I thought it was a picture of a nebula in space. This is great.

Location
I took this photo at the aquarium at the Albuquerque Zoo.Time
It was during the day, but inside of a dark building, so lighting looked like it was going to pose a huge problem.Lighting
I make it a personal challenge to photograph things behind glass without showing glare, which can be tough. I zoomed in and aimed my flash above the jellyfish, so it would bounce down and light it up from the top.Equipment
I was new to photography when I took this photo, I had my Canon T3i for about ten months, and had recently purchased a Canon 430 EX-II and Canon 18-200 lens. I took tons of pictures in the aquarium of different kinds of fish, and luckily this one panned out the way it did. The others, not so much.Inspiration
I see a lot of photos of jellyfish that just look like they were taken with camera phones, or people photographing them with the built-in flash. I really wanted to capture the feeling of being in the water with the jellyfish, even though it was behind glass.Editing
I did my basic adjustments in Adobe Bridge, then I imported the photo into Photoshop and tweaked with the contrast and curves over and over. I didn't have an image in my mind of how I wanted it to look before I started, but as I started fine-tuning the image, it came to life more and more and then I dialed in to what the image is now.In my camera bag
Since this photo, I have expanded my bag and currently pack in my Canon 200EG backpack: Canon 70D, Canon T3i, Canon 18-200 lens, Canon 50mm 1.8 lens, two Canon 430 EX-II Speedlites, Gossen Digipro F2 light meter, ExpoDisc, and Spyderholster belt.Feedback
Editing is best when shot in RAW rather than JPEG, zoom all the way in, and bounce the flash. Take lots of photos and rate them on your camera so you can easily sort through the best ones in post. Do not leave the scene until you know for certain you have captured some great pics. If you check your photos while you are shooting and think it can look better, keep shooting until you capture that perfect look.
