Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Xingping village, which is a small fishing village in Yangshuo, China. It's an old beautiful village surrounded by Karst mountains.

Time

his is one of my favorite because there is a an interesting story behind this shot. So i went to see this famous point called ¥20 point (landscape depicted on ¥20 currency). I wanted to capture some sunset shots behind the Karst mountains at that point. I was well prepared with all my gear and i reached there little early (around 5:00-5:30 pm) so i can set up everything. As i was waiting for the sunset luckily i saw this fisherman and i asked him if i can take some of his pictures and he gladly said yes. I got so excited that i totally forgot about the sunset but at the end i got lots of good fisherman pictures.

Lighting

To get this unique look i wanted little till it get little dark. I only wanted to use the lantern light (no surrounding light at all). My aim was to get a light on his face and rest leave everything little darker. It took me sometime to get the lighting i wanted but ultimately i did. I love how his face is lit by the yellow light of the lantern.

Equipment

For this photo i used sony A77 mark II and Tamron 18-200mm lens. I had my tripod ready too but for this shot i did not use it. I am very comfortable with my camera and most of the times i don't use tripod unless it totally necessary.

Inspiration

As i've said earlier i wanted to capture that ¥20 point during sunset. I planned everything accordingly as i knew that this is the only chance i have. There was no second visit ( i was leaving from Yangshuo the very next day). I was well prepared and i think it's all get paid off. I've seen some nice karst mountain pictures by other photographers and i wanted to click one myself but i guess i got lucky and got this interesting Fisherman shot.

Editing

Usually i use Adobe Lightroom and photoshop for post processing. For this particular shot i only used Adobe Lightroom . I always shoot in RAW so i can get the full control on the processing. On this photo i did not do much processing as i wanted to do justice to that i witnessed. I just did some color and contrast adjustment.

In my camera bag

camera: Sony A77 mark II Lenses: Tokina 11-16/2.8 mm , Tamron 90 mm prime, Tamron 18-200mm. A remote timer, some filters and very important few extra batteries.

Feedback

The only advice i have is that always be prepared. You should know your camera very well because when shooting at this hour light changes very fast and you need to change your camera settings accordingly. Always arrive at the location little early because you never know what you can find.
