Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Falls of Ohio state park in Clarksville, Indiana.

Time

This image as shot during the golden hour while hopefully waiting for a nice sunset.

Lighting

The natural lighting that the golden hour provides just can't be improved upon. The warm glow it adds to a scene is what fall is all about to me. In this image I got very lucky that this feral cat was kind enough to pose in the nook of the tree with the tall reeds glowing in the back ground setting off the color of it's eyes. The additional touch of glow on it's fur was an additional kindness from the wonderful natural glow.

Equipment

This image was shot using a FujiFilm S5 pro. Handheld. Tamron 18 - 270.

Inspiration

Being a huge animal lover, when we pulled into the parking lot I noticed a few feral cats wondering around the edges of the parking lot. I moved slowly and kept low to the ground to capture the kitties without spooking them. There were many that were hiding under bushes. Then I spied this beautiful feline just watching from the nook of a tree. With the tree framing part of the cat and the reeds in the back ground framing the other side it was just the perfect setting. Then looking through the viewfinder and making sure the reeds in the back ground were just enough out of focus the glow of the sun just set it up for me.

Editing

Normally I do a fair amount of post processing. This image was a rare case that I cropped in the image to make the framing of the tree and reeds more prominant and give the kitty center stage and just upped the saturation a touch. No further processing was necessary. The lighting that was supplied by nature was amazing and just couldn't be improved upon.

In my camera bag

My camera backpack holds a FujiFilm S 5 pro, FujiFilm is - pro (infrared), FujiFilm 505 (point & shoot). Lenses on both DSLR's are Tamron 18 - 270. I rarely use a tripod, but when I do it's a Vanguard Alta with an Acratech ballhead. Microfiber clother. Ruggard rain cover for DSLR's. Lens pen. Circ. polarizing filter. B&W 92nm filter for the infrared. 6 CF cards. 4 SD cards. Bug spray. Lip balm. At least one quarter coin for tightening the fast release plate. A tall kitchen garbage bag. Ibprofrin. Reusable water bottle. A small bag with a tiny water mister, tweesers, makeup brush, 12 in reflector and a scissors for minor adjustment to a macro setting. Flash light. Band aids. Eye drops - the times that I've had particles land in my eyes is just unreal. Clif bar. I know it sounds like a lot, but most of the items are small. Without bug spray, eye drops, band aids, clif bar, a trip can be cut short having to head back to the car when a couple of very light small items are all that's needed to keep me in the shooting location as long as I need.

Feedback

Patience. Move low and slow. Try to be at eye level. This often means being flat on your belly. In my group of photographer friends I'm the one that is most likely to be on the ground in a ditch, laying it wet grass (this is where the tall kitchen bag comes in handy), crouching by the side of a pond trying to capture a dragonfly. Look at everything from as many angles as you can without disturbing your subject. As always, morning and evening light is best and is when you'll see the felines (and other creatures) out and about more. Pay special attention to the back ground and then take as many shots as you can until your subject decides it's had enough and wanders off.
