Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken as part of a model warm up session in preparation for a separate image based on imagery of the tarot. The location was an upper level of a small condo in Key Largo, Florida.

Time

This image was taken in the late afternoon, when the sun is still absolutely blazing in Florida. The shot that I was preparing for was to be for sunset, but since we had the lovely shadows to work with, I decided to start the shoot a little early and capture the model in within the lines of the railing.

Lighting

This is mostly a natural light shot, however I did have a beauty dish up and to the left of the model to fill in the shadows and soften her curves.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon Rebel T3i, and using an Alien Bee's 800 with a beauty dish.

Inspiration

Again, this was part of a model warm up session, so the idea was to get the model loose and active for the actual session. Since the shoot was suppose to be for an image for my tarot series (The Page of Cups), which was to emphasize creative thinking, imagination, and a child like wonder, I thought it best to keep arranging the model in strange and unusual poses in contrast to her surroundings, and then let her take over from there with any thoughts she had as far as posing. Nothing was off limits. After a few unsuccessful attempts with different angles and poses, I calmly asked her to to strike the pose that is shown above. It was basically on a whim, but the results made us both very happy, and the rest of the shoot went perfectly.

Editing

There wasn't much post-processing for this image, mainly lightroom for the monochrome, then some subtle curves and levels adjustments. Aside from that just some minor photoshopping to remove skin blemishes.

In my camera bag

Nowadays, I am using a Canon 5D Markii, and my go to lenses are a 50 mm/1.4 and a 24-105 mm/3.6. I mostly do street work and portraiture, and if I need more lighting I rely on my speedlite.

Feedback

Don't be afraid to try something a little odd and different, and make sure you work with any and all available light; shadows can be your friend. But most importantly, make sure that you build a good relationship with the model you are working with; respect, consideration, and thoughtful words can go along way. Also, if you're in it just to photography beautiful women, don't do it.
