Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Nubra Valley, Ladakh, India. This place is situated among one of the highest mountains in the world, "Himalayas".

Time

This is one of the most favourite image in my catalog. it was past midnight and I was siting near a camp fire with some friends and there was no light all around. I went to my tent to get my phone and I was mesmerised when I looked up, as if I could touch the stars, it looked so bright and close. I immediately ran for my camera.

Lighting

I picked my camera and ran away from fire into an absolute dark area. It took some time to choose the place and setup the tripod. Many things were going through my mind, I wanted this opportunity to convert into my dream photograph. There was only single light source and that was starts. I clicked a few trial shots to get perfect settings and then this was my result. I feel so grateful to capture such a view at a high altitude in Himalayan region.

Equipment

This photo was taken with Canon EOS 600D, 18-55mm lens. I used tripod and remote for shutter release.

Inspiration

I have seen thousands of Milky Way photos and read about it a lot. I tried few shots in areas nearby cities but because of city lights I wasn't able to capture the bright starts. So for next month I planned to visit Himalayan remote places and I was sure to get a perfect shot there only if sky is clear. This was the perfect day for all I though about this photo, pitch dark, no moon, high altitude and bright stars.

Editing

yes, I did some basic corrections in Lightroom like, light, contrast, color correction and little bit sharpening.

In my camera bag

First thing in my camera bag goes Canon 600D. I carry a combination of telephoto (Tamron 70-300mm), a prime (Canon 50mm) and 18-55mm lens. other accessories include tripod, battery pack, extra memory, cleaning kit and sometimes few photography documents.

Feedback

Such kind of images required very specific conditions. first and the most important is light, means there should be pitch dark all around. higher the altitude better the sky looks and experiment a little bit with exposure based on your aperture. Always follow your heart and make what you feel is good, what makes you happy. Good luck.
