This photo was taken at an abandoned building, it had been left abandoned for quite a long amount of time, many of the floors and windows weren't present anymore. I had to travel to get to it, but the creepy draw of it made me want to go in so badly, some photos feel like they were meant to be and this one had to happen!Time
It was early morning, so I got a better chance of daylight coming through, with there being many holes in the walls and ceilings I had to ensure I had enough light to get around whilst exploring in a safe environment. I spent most of the day there, taking as many photos as possible, I started at 10 am and finished at 6pm before it began getting dark.Lighting
There were some key moment throughout the experience, I found that broken windows created strange shadows, so naturally the hall way, had a lot of open lights, with doors and the roof above creating square panels on the floor, I tried using flash on my camera and found it wasn't getting the right feeling, so I challenge my camera to work with darker environments .Equipment
This building being very urban, I had to explore with light a camera, travelling with a spare battery and a bottle of water, I used the Sony cyber shot, this camera may be a very small and not change lens, but it takes the most wonderful clear photos, I saved up every penny to buy a run around camera and it did it's job to extremes.Inspiration
I had this urge to get into this building, the idea of exploring something I didn't know, the fear and the adrenaline was enough to make me want to run around, I wasn't aware of how the corridors looked all I had found were a few photos online but they weren't enough to forfill what I needed to see, as soon as I saw the cracked door I ran too it drawn to it like a small child at Christmas, I began taking as many photos as possible even running to different ends to get the best shot possible, the walls peeling and the cream walls, just added so much texture to the final image.Editing
I straight away went on to adobe photoshop, I altered the colours and then found that black and white made it look quite threatening, I darkened the image to make the hall ending to give the viewer a chance to imagine things crawling out of the darkness. I ended up selection the doors and keeping the colour brown as it added in a natural colour, creating a warm feeling, almost making you feel safe past the doors. In my camera bag
I'm a fairly active photographer, cycling to new locations travelling where ever my next thought takes me, I usually carry my sony cyber shot and a spare battery, I occasionally have a tripod or a gorilla stand, but I try to keep it to a light load in order to allow safer travel.Feedback
I would say that travelling with other people is very important, if the building seems unsafe don't enter, travelling in groups means you will be safer and if you get into trouble there will be people to help, it also means if you want an urban shoot your friend can pose with you giving options to try new things. when it comes to hall ways try and get one that seems to be falling appart in more than three ways, paint peeling, lights on the floor and broken glass really tell a story about being forgotten, most abandoned places have different characters so try and imagine the character of the building by its hallways, lots of doors lots of people, one door means one escape, altering the colour can also add tension try to make contrasts where ever possible, pull as many colours as you can on exits, because it's the second thing you consider when in danger so make it tense and the shot will come naturally.
